Healing and Faith

Since ancient times, people have recognized the need for the restorative processes for their bodies, minds and souls. Places such as Lourdes with its waters, the potions and elixirs of primitive peoples, and the environmental retreats (clean air and sunshine for TB patients, etc.) of today are associated with our pursuits of healing. Technological progress in every field of medicine has given us unbelievable options: organ transplantation, replacement of body parts and joints, incisive lasers, diagnostic machines and procedures, and identification of genes, which "fingerprint" our individuality. Pharmaceutical advances now permit alterations of metabolism, hormones and chemical imbalances.

Recently, recognition of the interdependence of body, mind and spirit has led to a holistic approach to mankind's malfunctions. "Alternative medicine" is being blended into traditional forms of treatment. Dietary considerations are widely advised both as preventives and treatment. Recent studies have been quoted on the Power of Prayer to shorten hospital stay, and augment reparative results. Meditation and quiet times are practiced by many.

The Scriptures give credence to the Lord's awareness of our need for healing by His examples of anointing and praying (James 5:14-15), even to the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-45), and bringing about the disappearance of leprosy and blindness. How do we avail ourselves of this power to return to wholeness? Approaching God through faith and repentance helps to cleanse our minds and permit the innate restorative response of our bodies' immune systems to bear upon our illness. Seeking out the ordinance of Administration by the Laying of Hands by authoritative priesthood petitions our Creator, the Great Physician, to bless us according to His will at that time. Knowing that He who made us truly cares for us is our assurance of His love and concern for all our ills throughout our lifetime.
