Tongues and Interpretations

It should come as no surprise that God is the author and master of communication in any language. After all, according to the scriptural account, it was He who, in consultation with His Son, decided to confound the universal language still being used at the building of the Tower of Babel (Gen. 11:5-6 I. V.; Gen. 11: 6-9 K.J.V,). As a result, many languages were created and each group of people retained or were given a knowledge of only their own language, and could thereafter understand no one else. Hence, when God seeks to get the attention of a group of people, He sometimes elects to talk to them through a person speaking in an unknown tongue. However, God is not the author of confusion. To complete the effect of this authentic gift in demonstrating His power, He normally provides an interpretation of what has been given in the strange tongue. Thus, the divinely authorized message as well as its translated restatement are both impressed upon His audience. If the interpretation happens to be made by one of the group who is known to speak that language, the effect is very impressive. Otherwise, someone else in the audience is temporarily given the interpretation by divine power, and he/she reports this understandable message to the rest of the group. Such an experience is unforgettable, and the message so obtained is rarely forgotten. The accompanying powerful Spirit during this event is also memorable.
